WD Red Plus vs WD Red Pro: Which NAS Hard Drive Do You Need?

Illustration comparing two generic 3.5-inch NAS hard drives side by side in top view: a metal-lid drive labelled "WD Red Plus" (5640 RPM, 3-year warranty) next to one labelled "WD Red Pro" (7200 RPM, 5-year warranty), under the headline "Red Plus vs Red Pro".

Both are Western Digital CMR hard drives built for NAS boxes. The split is scale: WD rates the Red Plus for smaller arrays and lighter workloads, and the Red Pro for bigger, busier systems, with a faster spindle and a longer warranty.

Scope: two WD NAS drives, 8TB versions, linked to WD’s own US store.

Which to pick

  • Pick the WD Red Plus for a home or small-office NAS with up to 8 bays. Our pick because: WD lists it “For RAID-optimized NAS systems with up to 8 bays” [3] and rates it for 180TB a year [1][3], which covers most 2–4 bay home setups in our view. WD lists lower power draw and seek noise than for the Pro’s 8TB datasheet models [1][2], and it’s the lower price tier.
  • Pick the WD Red Pro for more than 8 bays, rack-mount boxes or heavy 24/7 use. Our pick because: WD’s store page lists “unlimited # of bays”, a 550TB/year rating, 7200 RPM and a “5-Year Limited Warranty” [4], against 180TB a year and 3 years for the Red Plus [1].

How we chose: research-based. We used WD’s US store pages and WD’s datasheets for both drives (cited below). This comparison covers two WD models only. We have not physically tested these drives. All performance and reliability figures are WD’s.

Side-by-side (8TB)

WD sells the 8TB Red Pro as WD8006FFBX, which the Red Pro datasheet doesn’t list (it lists WD8005FFBX and WD8003FFBX at 8TB) [2][4]. Datasheet-only Red Pro figures are labelled “datasheet 8TB models”.

Price tiers are relative to the products in this article. Each tier is based on the maker’s own US store listing, checked October 17, 2026 (ET). We don’t list street or retail prices because they change. “Not assigned” means we couldn’t find a price on the maker’s own US site. Check the current price before you buy.

Bays and workload: the real dividing line

The Red Plus is “For RAID-optimized NAS systems with up to 8 bays” [3], while the Red Pro is listed for “unlimited # of bays” and “Proven in tower and rack-mount systems with any number of bays” [4]. Workload ratings follow suit: 180TB a year versus 550TB a year [1][4]. Both pages also list RAID-oriented error handling: “RAID error recovery control” for the Red Plus [3] and “Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER)” for the Red Pro [4].

Speed, noise and power

The Red Pro spins at 7200 RPM against the Red Plus’s 5640 RPM, and WD lists up to 235MB/s for it versus up to 215MB/s for the Red Plus [3][4]. The datasheet’s 8TB Red Pro models also list higher average power and seek noise than the 8TB Red Plus [1][2]. In a living room or home office, that may matter as much as speed. (Our reading of WD’s figures, not a test result.)

Vibration sensors: WD’s pages disagree

The Red Plus store page says “WD Red hard drives include Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors” [3]. The Red Plus datasheet doesn’t list RV sensors in its spec table [1], while the Red Pro datasheet has a dedicated RV sensors row marked yes for its 8TB models [2]. WD’s own documents don’t settle it, so we don’t count RV sensors as a confirmed Red Plus feature.

Reliability ratings and warranty

WD rates the Red Plus at 1,000,000 hours MTBF [1]. For the Red Pro, the store page says “up to 2.5 million hours” [4], a line-wide “up to” figure; the datasheet gives 2,000,000 hours for its 12TB and smaller models, including the 8TB ones it lists [2]. The Red Pro footnote begins “Projected Values.” and says MTBF ratings “do not predict an individual drive’s reliability and do not constitute a warranty” [2][4]. The firmer difference is the warranty: 3 years for the Red Plus [1] and 5 for the Red Pro [2][4]. Our take: neither rating replaces a backup.
